On Saturday 21st 2012 a fundraising event was held at the Shenandoah Country Club in West Bloomfield, MI to raise funds for the families that have been affected by the Syrian regime. The initial goal for the fundraiser was one million dollars, but after many vigorous appeals for donations, the final tally came up to close to 800K, which was less than expected given the prestigious status and the affluence of the attendees.

Nevertheless the numbers are staggering by all means and it was a great step toward helping the needy and the families that have been affected greatly, especially during the current season, in which the weather is extremely cold and resources are hard to come by.

The tipping point during the fundraiser was when a person came up on stage and told his story about how his son died while helping other people. He was an EMT and the Syrian  government forces shot him to death. That’s when the man decided to come to the United States and bring his whole family with him. During the story, people started crying, men started giving checks, and the women started giving their jewelry, and even the children started giving their pocket money for the cause. It was truly a compelling sight.

Dr. Mujahid Al-Fayadh is the President and CEO of ‘Life for Relief and Development’, the largest US-based Muslim charity, located in Southfield, MI. He has been leading efforts in humanitarian relief since 1989 and offered to transfer the money raised for Syrians to the needy and the appropriate  channels.
